Synopsis (from Goodreads)
Life in the outer realm is a lawless, dirty, hard existence, and Solara Brooks is hungry for it. Just out of the orphanage, she needs a fresh start in a place where nobody cares about the engine grease beneath her fingernails or the felony tattoos across her knuckles. She’s so desperate to reach the realm that she’s willing to indenture herself to Doran Spaulding, the rich and popular quarterback who made her life miserable all through high school, in exchange for passage aboard the spaceliner Zenith.
When a twist of fate lands them instead on the Banshee, a vessel of dubious repute, Doran learns he’s been framed on Earth for conspiracy. As he pursues a set of mysterious coordinates rumored to hold the key to clearing his name, he and Solara must get past their enmity to work together and evade those out for their arrest. Life on the Banshee may be tumultuous, but as Solara and Doran are forced to question everything they once believed about their world—and each other—the ship becomes home, and the eccentric crew family. But what Solara and Doran discover on the mysterious Planet X has the power to not only alter their lives, but the existence of everyone in the universe…
Review
A story in SPACE, what an amazing settlement, I like it when an author takes me somewhere else, in another world.
Solara is an orphan; she wants to go to the outer realm in a new terra-formed planet called Vega. To do that she needs a place in a ship, so when Doran Spaulding proposes her to be his maid in exchange of a transport, she accepts. Doran treats her miserably; he’s not gentle and kind on the contrary. They must find another ship to take them in Obsidian but I won’t tell you more about the story because you need to read it.
Space is vast and there are so many possibilities, I like that there is pirates, and the ship crew are great.
Solara is brave and smart; she knows what she wants and what she must do to have it. Her first days with Doran are awful and she’s not sleeping much but she takes care of the situation pretty well. She acclimatizes very well with the crew and makes the repairs on the vessel. The crew is not perfect, they are outlawed and looked for but Solara appreciates them. She’s a hard worker but sadly she has a record, she’s a criminal or at least technically but her story is surprising.
Doran is a rich kid and he’s an arrogant ass in the beginning of the book. When they arrive on the Banshee, he’s not himself and he will become more human and I finally love him so much. He’s attractive, protective, he’s determined to reach Obsidian and find out what his father wants him to do. He’s kind and he will fight for Solara and the Banshee’s crew with all he have.
Now let’s talk about the crew, the captain is an old man, very clever, he knew Solara and Doran secret in the beginning. The first mate is Renny, and he’s a Kleptomaniac but he’s so fun. The ships hands are Cassia and Kade, they know each other since a long time and I totally ship them, even if their story is complicated.
The romance is here but it builds itself slowly throughout the story. I really appreciated this change of attitudes of the characters. And there is no love triangle, just a romance who begin with hate and finish with love.
The end is a real one, the author has only signed for one book when she sold Starflight so she’s not letting us with many unsolved mysteries even if there is some. And the good news is there will be a sequel next year so YEAH, the questions I have will be answered or at least I hope.
I really love Alienated and Starflight is exactly the same, Melissa Landers is a great author, she has created a good story in space with pirates, criminals and romance. If you like story who takes place in space and if you liked Alienated, you must read Starflight because it’s just AWESOME. The story is so good, the characters are fun and the setting is amazing in brief this book is very good and you must read it.
