“Aerity…” Her father paused as if the words he was forming pained him. “I must ask you to sacrifice the promise of love for the sake of our kingdom.”

She could only stare back, frozen.

When a strange beast terrorizes the kingdom of Lochlanach, fear stirs revolt. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona—kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.

Princess Aerity knows her duty to the kingdom but cannot bear the idea of marrying a stranger…until a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention. There’s no denying the unspoken lure between them…or his mysterious resentment.

Paxton is not the marrying type. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He’s determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast—but the princess continues to surprise him, and the perilous secrets he’s buried begin to surface.

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ tale “The Singing Bone,” New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins delivers a dark fantasy filled with rugged hunters, romantic tension, and a princess willing to risk all to save her kingdom.

I wanted to wait for the release of the second book to read The Great Hunt but I’m impatient and I didn’t know how to resist. I adore Wendy’s books and I had the immense pleasure to meet her in Edinburgh this year.

So let’s talk about the story, the kingdom of Lochlanach has a problem with a beast who killed men every night. Thus the soldiers cannot stop it, the king proposes to the hunter which will kill the animal, to marry his daughter, Aerity. Hunters from all kingdoms arrive to Lochlanach.

The story is interesting, where this beast come from? Why does it kill? Is there someone behind his appearance? There are so many questions for which you will have the answer. There is also some Lashed people, they are people who used magic in the past and who has magic actually. They are treated as outcasts, only because in the past one of them wanted to take power.

Now for the characters, there are many and I like a lot of them, they are all different.

Aerity is the older daughter of the king, she has a sister Vixie and a brother Donubhan. In the kingdom of Lochlnach, usually, there is only marriage of love. In order to save his country, Aerity will sacrifice his freedom of choice. She will marry the hunter who kills the beast, even if she does not like or prefer another. I find her courageous, she really thinks of his priority in people and that’s an important thing when going to become queen. She’s not like other people, she has no problem with Lashed people, she doesn’t like how they are treated, she wants to change that in the future.

Paxton Seabolt is a hunter, with his brother Tiern, they are coming to the castle to kill the beast. Paxton doesn’t want to marry the princess and he shows her very intensely that he doesn’t like her. He has a little problem with royalty and you’ll find why in reading the book. I like that he is brave, arrogant but also can doubts at times. He loves his brother, but he would have preferred that it does not accompany and remain safe. Paxton takes risks in order to kill the beast.

Wyneth is Aerity’s cousin, her fiancé was killed by the beast and she was with him. She’s very closed to her cousin, they support each other, even when hunters arrive and things get complicated.

Tiern is so sweet, I like him, he’s not like his brother, and he speaks well and has no problem with royalty.

Lief is another hunter, I can’t say I like him because he’s here to kill the beast and marry the princess even if he loves another one. He’s strong and I’m afraid of what will happen in The Great Pursuit.

There are a lot of characters and it’s easy to follow them all and love them too. The end was heart-breaking for me and now I have some questions, but mostly I’m afraid for Aerity, Paxton and all the others.

Wendy Higgins creates a very rich and complex world, human and real characters, and an exciting story that devours. I like her writing style, I don’t know where she’s finding all her ideas and the names of her characters but I love Wendy Higgins. I’m very impatient for The Great Pursuit and I can say that I’m happy that it’s just a duology because in 7 long months I will have the end of this story.

Quick word: For lovers of fantasy and magical world.
