Synopsis

Vickie has always lived a quiet, ordinary life in an equally quiet and ordinary small town. Yet one fateful night a child turns up dead in the woods behind her house in a ritualistic slaughter. Vickie and her family are suddenly thrown into a national spotlight. But as the investigation unfolds, she begins to realize her family isn’t so ordinary after all. Evil is inching closer to those she holds dear and Vickie isn’t sure who she can ultimately trust.

Review

It had been a long time since I had read a horror novel and I can say I enjoyed it.

Vickie loves her simple and ordinary life; she lives with her parents, her twin brother Travis and her other brother Kevin. Their uncle lives in an apartment above the garage and their grandfather in the neighboring farm. It’s a very simple Christian family, normal teenagers but when Michelle, the daughter of their neighbor is found dead, everything changes.

Vickie is an ordinary girl, she wants what is simplest in life, stay in her hometown near her family, have a boyfriend and continue her studies. I like Vickie, she’s intelligent, she knows how to use her brain but at several moments it irritated me. I don’t understand how she cannot think about the consequences of her actions when she breaks the law. Certainly it’s for the good cause but the investigation in progress is upset and she takes the risk that the real culprit is not found. Apart from that Vickie is adorable, she will discover that her family hides many things, they are not all perfect and of course there is not only her family.

I’m not going to tell you about the other characters because I prefer you to find them alone. They are not all endearing and the author has left me a little bit hungry because even knowing the guilty, I still don’t know his real motivations. I think the psychological level of the characters could have been developed.

That said Ultimate Sacrifice is well-tied, the plot is gripping and you want to discover the culprit and I can tell you that everyone is suspicious. I wanted to go into the book and help Vickie or hit her sometimes.

The characters could have been a little more developed, especially Kevin and Travis. As much as Kevin seems fairly real but I found it difficult to identify with Travis and his change of character.

One thing I loved more than anything is the end, it’s rare that I am so happy with an end but this book couldn’t finish otherwise and I’m delighted.

The writing style of S.E Green is nice and she takes us into a story in search of the culprit among not so innocent beings.

Quick Word: A reading for Halloween to savor near fireplace.
