Ginger Holtzman s’est toujours battue dans la vie. Pour le succès de son salon de tatouage, pour être respectée dans la profession, pour monter son exposition de peinture. C’est une femme forte et indépendante, qui ne se laisse pas faire et qui a élevé cette habitude au rang d’art. Et d’ailleurs, ça tombe bien. Parce qu’entre gérer sa boutique, prendre soin de ses amis et s’empresser de terminer ses tableaux, elle n’a quasiment plus une minute à elle. Et au final… tant mieux. Ainsi, elle ne remarque pas à quel point elle est seule. Elle s’en sortira sans l’aide de personne, comme elle l’a toujours fait. Christopher Lucen vient d’ouvrir un café dans le sud de Philadelphie. Après des années à errer de ville en ville à la poursuite de quelque chose d’indéfinissable, il recherche un sentiment d’appartenance à une communauté. Il savoure à présent la complicité tranquille nouée entre lui et ses clients réguliers, et prend plaisir à les satisfaire. Mais ce qu’il recherche par-dessus tout, c’est l’amour. Dès leur rencontre, Christopher a le coup de foudre, mais Ginger… n’est pas franchement convaincue. Christopher est magnifique et gentil, c’est vrai ; les extrêmes s’attirent et leur attirance mutuelle fait des étincelles. Mais s’éclater au lit est une chose. Tomber vraiment amoureux, c’en est une autre. Et c’est terrifiant. Quand le monde de Ginger commence à s’effondrer autour d’elle, elle doit se rendre à l’évidence : pour remporter ce combat, elle devra se montrer vulnérable. C’est une bataille qu’elle ne pourra pas gagner seule. Dépasser ses doutes est le premier volet d’une nouvelle saga qui s’inscrit dans l’univers de la série Ici et ailleurs, dont sont issus les personnages, mais cette histoire peut se lire séparément. La série Small Changes comportera des histoires d’amour hétérosexuelles et homosexuelles.
