Synopsis
When seventeen-year-old Nedra Brysstain leaves her home in the rural, northern territories of Lunar Island to attend the prestigious Yugen Academy, she has only one goal in mind: learn the trade of medicinal alchemy. A scholarship student matriculating with the children of Lunar Island’s wealthiest and most powerful families, Nedra doesn’t quite fit in with the other kids at Yugen, who all look down on her.
All, except for Greggori “Grey” Astor. Grey is immediately taken by the brilliant and stubborn Nedra, who he notices is especially invested in her studies. And that’s for a good reason: a deadly plague has been sweeping through the North, and it’s making its way toward the cities. With her family’s life–and the lives of all of Lunar Island’s citizens–on the line, Nedra is determined to find a cure for the plague.
Grey and Nedra continue to grow closer, but as the sickness spreads and the body count rises, Nedra becomes desperate to find a cure. Soon, she finds herself diving into alchemy’s most dangerous corners–and when she turns to the most forbidden practice of all, necromancy, even Grey might not be able to pull her from the darkness.
Review
Nedra is accepted to the prestigious Yugen Academy, she will finally be able to understand the reasons for the plague that is decimating the campaigns. She’s going to have to make some pretty drastic choices to find out the truth.
Nedra is a young girl full of will; she has an impressive strength of character. As a student on a scholarship, she is not well treated by her classmates, except for Grey, who appreciates her very much. I really like the evolution of Nedra over the course of the book; I must tell you that I really liked the darkness of this book. I don’t want to tell you too much, but I look forward to reading the second book and finding out what Nedra will do and especially what Grey will do.
Grey is a very nice boy, he tries to help Nedra but as he comes from a rich family he is afraid of the epidemic that has not yet arrived in town. He has difficulty supporting Nedra when she goes to help the sick in the hospital, he does not offer his help, out of fear or lack of courage.
I loved this book, it’s Young adult but a little darker than the others, the romance is there but we don’t really know how it will end even if I keep a little hope.
Beth Revis is talented, she has managed to create a main character who goes from the dark side but who is understood more than anything.
Quick word: A dark story with an epidemic to heal.
Chronique
