Synopsis
The new gut-wrenching epic from the New York Times bestselling author of Sky in the Deep.
For as long as she can remember, Tova has lived among the Svell, the people who found her washed ashore as a child and use her for her gift as a Truthtongue. Her own home and clan are long-faded memories, but the sacred symbols and staves inked over every inch of her skin mark her as one who can cast the rune stones and see into the future. She has found a fragile place among those who fear her, but when two clans to the east bury their age-old blood feud and join together as one, her world is dangerously close to collapse.
For the first time in generations, the leaders of the Svell are divided. Should they maintain peace or go to war with the allied clans to protect their newfound power? And when their chieftain looks to Tova to cast the stones, she sets into motion a series of events that will not only change the landscape of the mainland forever but will give her something she believed she could never have again—a home.
Review
The girl the sea gave back tells us Halvard’s story ten years after the events of Sky in the deep. So we were seeing the characters of Sky in the deep again, even if it’s very brief.
It all starts with Tova, she doesn’t know her clan, the Kyrr, because they abandoned her, at least that’s what she believes and what the person who took her in tells her. She is now a Truthongue, she reads the future in the stones and the Svells, her new people, do not appreciate her. They consider her a witch who only brings them evil. The Svells have only one desire, to wage war on the Nadhirs. So they will interpret Tova’s messages in their own way.
Halvard has grown up well, he is now a man and has been chosen to be the next leader of the Nadhir. The latter are the new names of the two peoples of Sky in the deep, the Rikkis and the Askas. Halvard will try to prevent the war.
I loved Halvard very much and that hasn’t changed, he’s grown up but he’s still a smart and kind boy. He will be a good leader and I like to see how he has evolved.
I like Tova too, she has always been influenced by the Svell who took her in but she tries to rebel. She’s a young girl who just wants her memory back.
The relationship between Halvard and Tova is slowly being built, I appreciated that even though I find it is not really successful. I would have liked a clearer ending.
The narrative is alternated between Halvard and Tova but also between the present and the past. Adrienne Young has a gift for writing battle scenes because I managed to imagine myself in the middle of the battle without any worries.
Quick word: A 10-year leap in Halvard’s history that is perfectly successful.
Chronique
The girl the sea gave back nous raconte l’histoire d’Halvard dix ans après les évènements de Sky in the deep.
