Synopsis

No one can save her.

In order to protect Prince Lucien d’Malvane’s heart, Zera had to betray him. Now, he hates the sight of her. Trapped in Cavanos as a prisoner of the king, she awaits the inevitable moment her witch severs their magical connection and finally ends her life.

But fate isn’t ready to give her up just yet.

With freedom coming from the most unlikely of sources, Zera is given a seconde chance at life as a Heartless. But it comes with a terrible price. As the king mobilizes his army to march against the witches, Zera must tame an elusive and deadly valkerax trapped in the tunnels underneath the city if she wants to regain her humanity.

Winning over a bloodthirsty valkerax? Hard. Winning back her friends before war breaks out? A little harder.

But a Heartless winning back Prince Lucien’s heart?

The hardest thing she’s ever done.

Review

This second volume resumes just at the end of the first one, Zera saved Lucien but as a result he discovered her true nature. We also discover that Lucien’s sister Varia is not dead and that she knows how to use her magical powers. Zera is now a prisoner of Varia and she must do whatever she asks her to do. Her relationship with Lucien has deteriorated significantly.

Zera is always funny, I find her endearing even if she has sometimes irritated me, I understand that she doesn’t trust anyone but when her friends try to come back to her, she doesn’t have to push them away.

Lucien is more distant with Zera and he tries to understand what Varia forces her to do but nothing is simple and he too has his little secret.

Varia doesn’t have much interest for me, she’s a villain who, like all the big villains, thinks she’ll save the world, but unfortunately the collateral damage will be there.

Yorl is a new character who is also very friendly. I hope we’ll see him again in the next volume.

I really liked the story, it is interesting and captivating, the main characters are endearing and I liked to see Lucien’s reaction to Zera. I’m really looking forward to reading the next book and seeing how Zera, Lucien and all the others will manage.

Quick word: A very nice second volume.

Chronique

About the author

Sara Wolf is a twenty-something author who adores baking, screaming at her cats, and screaming at herself while she types hilarious things. When she was a kid, she was too busy eating dirt to write her first terrible book. Twenty years later, she picked up a keyboard and started mashing her fists on it and created the monster known as the Lovely Vicious series. She lives in San Diego with two cats, a crippling-yet-refreshing sense of self-doubt, and not enough fruit tarts ever.
