Synopsis
Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.
A duty
The entire kingdom’s future rest on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And a longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden
A Kingdom
Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her lofe when every blood-soaked threat that holds her together begins to unravel.
Review
Penellaphe is the Chosen One, she must rise within a year because she has been chosen by the Gods. Currently, she is under the protection of the Duke and Duchess. She is protected by two bodyguards, Vikter and Rylan. Vikter teaches her to defend herself even if it is against all the rules. Indeed the chosen one must never leave the castle, she must never talk to anyone, must not be seen without her veil hiding her face, must not have any contact with a man, or even a social and friendly relationship. If she deviates from one of these rules she is punished by the Duke. After Rylan’s death, Hawke becomes her new guard. The latter is extremely attractive and he will challenge her vision of life.
I don’t really know how to tell you about this book without saying too much, so I’ll just say that I liked Penellaphe (poppy). She’s a strong, reckless girl who wants to protect the people but she doesn’t have the right to do so. She has no right to do anything and it weighs on her. Her meeting with Hawke will change everything.
Hawke is great, he protects Poppy but he also knows how to see everything she doesn’t tell him, he’s discreet and he likes to push Poppy into his corner, he tries to make her see the truth.
I loved Hawke, I saw through his game pretty quickly and it’s not because the story is clichéd but I think I’m starting to understand how Jennifer L Armentrout’s mind works.
I really loved this book, it’s another favorite for me and I can’t wait for you to read it so I can talk about it with you.
Quick word: a novel full of mystery that is absolutely brilliant.
Chronique
