On the tenth anniversary of the Dark One’s defeat, something unthinkable happens: one of the Chosen Ones dies. When the others gather for the funeral, they discover the Dark One’s ultimate goal was much bigger than they, the government, or even prophecy could have foretold – bigger than the world itself.
And this time, fighting back might take more than Sloane has to give.
Review
15 years ago, five ordinary teenagers were chosen by a prophecy to fight evil. Now that everything’s back to normal, Sloane’s having a hard time adjusting, and she’s hiding a terrible secret. On the tenth anniversary of the defeat of the Dark One while they’re all together, something happens.
That’s the story. It’s told by Sloane, who’s having a hard time moving on. The events of 15 years ago killed her father and brother. Sloane was then taken to fight evil. Of all the protagonists, Sloane and Albie suffered the most at the hands of the Dark One. After a tragic event Sloane, Esther and Matt will find themselves in an alternate world and they will have to find and fight the Dark One of that world.
I really liked that story, I can’t really say Sloane is endearing, but I still managed to bond with her. Sloane is misunderstood, mainly because she didn’t tell her friends everything and she had to make a choice that will make her feel guilty probably for the rest of her life. She makes decisions that sometimes go against Matt’s advice, but she follows her instincts.
Matt was the leader of the group at the time and he’s kept his leadership side, I think he’s pretty arrogant towards Sloane, he thinks he knows what’s best for her and what she should do. He doesn’t understand why she’s never recovered from the events of the past.
Mox is a charismatic character, he hides a lot of things but deep down he’s a very nice man who only wants to protect himself.
Veronica Roth takes us into an adult story with more depth than Divergent. I liked the difference in character of the different characters. They are all very important to the story and their union is a strength.
Quick word: A successful first book that promises an excellent sequel.

Il y a 15 ans, cinq adolescents ordinaires ont été choisis par une prophecy pour combattre le mal. Maintenant que tout est redevenu normal, Sloane a du mal à s’ajuster et elle cache un terrible secret. Au dixième anniversaire de la défaite du mal alors qu’ils sont tous réunis un évènement se produit.
Voilà l’histoire, elle est racontée par Sloane qui a beaucoup de mal à tourné la page. Il faut dire que les évènements d’il y a 15 ans ont tué son père et son frère. Sloane a ensuite été emmenée pour combattre le Mal. De tous les protagonistes Sloane et Albie sont ceux qui ont le plus souffert entre les mains du « Dark One ». Après un évènement tragique Sloane, Esther et Matt vont se retrouver dans un monde alternatif et ils vont devoir trouver et combattre le « Dark One » de ce monde.
J’ai vraiment bien aimé cette histoire, on ne peut pas vraiment dire que Sloane soit attachante mais j’ai quand même réussi à m’attacher à elle. Sloane est incomprise, principalement parce qu’elle n’a pas tout dit à ses amis et qu’elle a dû faire un choix qui la fera se sentir coupable probablement toute sa vie. Elle prend des décisions qui vont parfois à l’encontre de ce que conseille Matt mais elle suit son instinct.
Matt était le chef de la bande à l’époque et il a gardé son côté chef, je le trouve assez arrogant envers Sloane, il croit savoir ce qui lui convient le mieux et ce qu’elle doit faire. Il ne comprend pas pourquoi elle ne s’est jamais remise des évènements du passé.
Mox est un personnage charismatique, il cache beaucoup de choses mais au fond de lui c’est un homme très sympathique qui ne cherche qu’à se protéger.
Veronica Roth nous embarque dans une histoire adulte avec plus de profondeur que Divergent. J’ai bien aimé la différence de caractère des différents personnages. Ils sont tous très importants pour l’histoire et leur union est une force.
En bref : Un premier livre réussi qui promet une suite excellente.
