Synopsis

Ash is descended from a long line of gladiators, and she knows the brutal nature of war firsthand. But after her mother dies in an arena, she vows to avenge her by overthrowing her fire god, whose temper has stripped her country of its resources.

Madoc grew up fighting on the streets to pay his family’s taxes. But he hides a dangerous secret: he doesn’t have the earth god’s powers like his opponents. His elemental gift is something else—something that hasn’t been seen in centuries.

When an attempted revenge plot goes dangerously wrong, Ash inadvertently throws the fire and earth gods into a conflict that can only be settled by deadly, lavish gladiator games. The fights put Madoc in Ash’s path, and she realizes that his powers are the weapon her rebellion needs—but Madoc won’t jeopardize his family, regardless of how intrigued he is by the beautiful warrior.

But when the gods force Madoc’s hand, he and Ash uncover an ancient war that will threaten more than one immortal—it will unravel the world.

Review

Set fire to the gods sends us to another time. One where the six remaining gods fight in arenas to resolve conflicts. Rather or 6 Gods who send gladiators with powers to fight in their place.

Madoc has no powers yet he will have to fight in the war between His God, Geoxus God of Earth against Ignitus God of Fire. To save his family he will have to win.

However, he will discover new powers that he does not master. He will also discover that he has been manipulated for a long time.

Ash, on her side, will provoke war by interfering in a fight that her mother, Char, is fighting against Stavos, a warrior of Geoxus who has poisoned his blade.

I won’t tell you any more except that the story takes a long time to set up and that we have to hold on because it is worth the detour.

I love Ash, she is stubborn, strong, she knows how to use her fire powers and she won’t hesitate to change her mind when she realizes that she didn’t understand the whole situation.

At first Madoc is skeptical but he will get closer to Ash and understand that she is the one who was able to put a name and an explanation on his powers.

I just can’t wait to read the next volume to find out how Ash and Madoc will save the people.

I already knew about Sara Raasch’s pen but I had never looked at Kristen Simmons’ despite the fact that I have many of her books in my TBR. So I’m going to do something about it this year without fail.

Quick word: A book that takes a long time to start but promises a lot of action.

Chronique

About the authors

Sara Raasch has known she was destined for bookish things since the age of five, when her friends had a lemonade stand and she tagged along to sell her hand-drawn picture books too. Not much has changed since then — her friends still cock concerned eyebrows when she attempts to draw things and her enthusiasm for the written word still drives her to extreme measures. Her debut YA fantasy, SNOW LIKE ASHES, the first in a trilogy, came out October 14, 2014 from Balzer + Bray. It does not feature her hand-drawn pictures.

Kristen Simmons is the author of the ARTICLE 5 series, THE GLASS ARROW, METALTOWN, PACIFICA, and the upcoming DECEIVERS. She loves her family, Jazzercise, and chocolate cupcakes. She currently lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.
