The romantic sequel to Alienated takes long-distance relationships to a new level as Cara and Aelyx long for each other from opposite ends of the universe…until a threat to both their worlds reunites them.
Cara always knew life on planet L’eihr would be an adjustment. With Aelyx, her L’eihr boyfriend, back on Earth, working to mend the broken alliance between their two planets, Cara is left to fend for herself at a new school, surrounded by hostile alien clones. Even the weird dorm pet hates her.
Things look up when Cara is appointed as human representative to a panel preparing for a human colony on L’eihr. A society melding their two cultures is a place where Cara and Aelyx could one day make a life together. But with L’eihr leaders balking at granting even the most basic freedoms, Cara begins to wonder if she could ever be happy on this planet, even with Aelyx by her side.
Meanwhile, on Earth, Aelyx, finds himself thrown into a full-scale PR campaign to improve human-L’eihr relations. Humans don’t know that their very survival depends on this alliance: only Aelyx’s people have the technology to fix the deadly contamination in the global water supply that human governments are hiding. Yet despite their upper hand, the leaders of his world suddenly seem desperate to get humans on their side, and hardly bat an eye at extremists’ multiple attempts on Aelyx’s life.
The Way clearly needs humans’ help . . . but with what? And what will they ask for in return?
This book took place just after the end of Alienated, Cara is on L’eirh and Aelyx goes to earth to restore the broken alliance between the two planets.
Let’s begin with Cara, her adaptation on L’eihr is hard, clones don’t like her and trust her. Her only friend is Elle, who is Aelyx’s sister but she also has Jaxen on her side, the problem is she doesn’t trust him. Troy, Cara’s brother is on L’eihr too but for a short period. She must fight for a better life on the colony and she must discover a secret that will threatened earth. I like Cara as much as in the first book, I understand her, she’s alone on a new planet and she try her best to smile and be happy, even without Aelyx. I like the brotherhood between her and Troy, they love each other even if family hugs are weird for Troy. She missed Aelyx but she trusts him with her life.
For Aelyx, his time on earth is hard too, his life is in danger and he must have a guard with him anytime. He’s trying to help human and let them see that he’s not a treat for them. Aelyx is my boy, I love him, he’s strong and protective, and he gives some good advice to David and Syrine. His relation with Cara is one of full love and trust, they aren’t in the same planet but their love is strong and real.
Now I just want to talk about the difference between L’eihr and Earth. The Earth in Invaded is our earth, same rules and same people. On L’eihr, the difference is the liberty, the freedom, let me explain. Each clone is genetically created from samples of Perfect People, no decease, no problem. The Way, L’eihr’s leaders decide what job the clone will do, they are working every day, no pleasure and if they don’t follow the rules, they are beaten with an Iphet (an electric whisk) or they are killed. As I said, no liberty and I can say that I understand why Cara don’t like it but also why Aelyx like that. In L’eihr, there are no futilities, no television, no radio and people only have rooms for themselves, and the kitchen and bathroom are shared. At first it’s weird but the purpose is to create contact between people.
I love a lot of thing in Invaded, the love between Cara and Aelyx, the description of L’eihr, the friendship between Aelyx and David, the strong family link between Cara and Troy and all the problems due to long distance relationship. All of this is well described and Melissa Landers’s makes me want to go in the book and take Cara’s place. I would love to go on L’eihr even if it’s very different from Earth and if there is a lot of work to do for freedom.
As for the story itself, the plot wasn’t a surprise for me, but it’s well written and you can’t stop the book before the end.
I received United, so you can guess what will be my next reading, no surprise here.
If you haven’t read Alienated, go for it because this series is a must read.
If you read Alienated, buy Invaded because this book tells us more about where Aelyx come from.
Quick word: A great story between Humans and Aliens with love, action, friendship and treason.
