Rating: Evil Love

Being on the run in the desert means food and sanctuary are hard to come by, but Amber Tate and her crew are not about to give up. Not after having so many of the things they love brutally ripped from them by an unknown enemy who sent their world into the apocalypse.

Survival takes precedence, but once safe shelter is found, their guards fall and the emotions they’ve been holding in are finally released. Anger, insecurities…lust. In their tight quarters, Amber, Rylen, Tater, and Remy can’t escape it. The past must be faced, and passions run even stronger in the darkest of times.

In the midst of unrest, their worlds are rocked again when they discover the truth about the war that’s ruined their lives. They thought finding out the enemy’s identity would give them the edge; instead it’s revealed terrifying dangers they never thought possible.

This review will be without spoiler for this book but there will be some from Unknown so if you haven’t read it, stop reading right now.

Unrest takes place just after Unknown, Amber, Tater, Rylen and Remy are on survival mode with other army guys. They must find a military base and hope that it’s not the DRI who send the message. Amber and Tater’s parents and grandma are dead, same for Rylen’s wife and Remy’s parents. The DRI kill them with bomb and now they are on search for outliers.

Amber is a paramedic and seeing her family got bombed was heartbreaking. She must be strong but it’s hard when hope isn’t here. Amber is in love with Rylen since she’s13 years old, but he’s seeing her like a little sister, or at least that’s what she thinks. She must deals with sadness and guilt because she wants Rylen but it doesn’t feel right because of the death of his wife. I like Amber, she’s a strong woman, I can totally identify myself to her because her way of dealing with sadness is to not talk about them. I don’t say that it’s a good way but I’m like her. On the love side, she gives hint to Rylen but he is a man and he doesn’t understand them, jealousy is present a lot in Unrest too.

Tater has more problems to deal with loss, he is a little depressed. His way of dealing is to protect the people he loved but not get engaged in a relation with anyone. I like him, he was fun in the first book but with all the events that happened he is sad and a little hopeless. He is a great brother and a good friend.

Rylen is the strong one, he is the person everyone can count on, he lost his wife but also a part of his family because Amber’s family was a little his too. He doesn’t let anyone see his sadness, I love him, he is kind, smart and over protective. He loves Amber and wants to protect her, same for Remy and Tater.

Remy is broken and ill, good for her that Amber is a paramedic and Tater likes her. Remy is a good girl, she wants to change and not be the easy girl anymore. She loves Tater but she doesn’t know how to be with him.

This team is a good one, together they are stronger and better, the enemy is real, we don’t see them a lot in this book, mostly at the end. But there is other enemy; people who are afraid can do horrible things. The world is on war, enemy is winning but rebels want revenge. They haven’t a lot of hope but they are brave and strong.

I like the fact that everything isn’t going well in this book, the protagonists died of hunger, thirst, refrigerated and they fight to survive. They find refuge and their lives are getting better. The threat is always real but they organize and protect themselves, it’s a thing that I like, they don’t take for granted the little things or the little happiness that they have.

Wendy Higgins, once again write a story where love and action are real, this trilogy is darker than her previous books but hope is present, happiness also at times and I like the fact that Wendy imagined a world where we are invaded. This is unlikely with all that is happening in the world right now.

I’m really impatient to see what will happens in the last book because the end is not good at all, they are in a bad position and I don’t know if the story can have a happy end or not. But I’m hoping for it because it can be the other way.

Quick word: A perfect second book for this trilogy.
