Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Raised in the Los Angeles hinterlands by a hippie mom, Alex dropped out of school early and into a world of shady drug dealer boyfriends, dead-end jobs, and much, much worse. By age twenty, in fact, she is the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicide. Some might say she’s thrown her life away. But at her hospital bed, Alex is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world’s most elite universities on a full ride. What’s the catch, and why her?

Still searching for answers to this herself, Alex arrives in New Haven tasked by her mysterious benefactors with monitoring the activities of Yale’s secret societies. These eight windowless “tombs” are well-known to be haunts of the future rich and powerful, from high-ranking politicos to Wall Street and Hollywood’s biggest players. But their occult activities are revealed to be more sinister and more extraordinary than any paranoid imagination might conceive.

Alex Stern is recruited by Lethe to monitor all the Yale fraternities, she will have to investigate murders and the disappearance of Darlington, her mentor.

I loved this book, Leigh’s style is beautiful, the rhythm is slow, you have time to get used to it and to get attached to the different characters.

Alex is an independent, strong and courageous young woman. After all she has been through; I am impressed that she is still sane. She hasn’t had an easy past and what is being asked of her doesn’t make it any easier. I’ve become really attached to her, I like the fact that she can see ghosts and talk to them.

Darlington isn’t in the book because he’s missing, but we see him through past events. I really appreciated what I discovered about him but it is not enough and I hope that volume two will solve this little problem.

I liked the story about all the Yale fraternities, it’s really a world apart and it’s very interesting to discover this magical world.

Quick Word: An incursion into the world of Yale’s magical fraternities.
