Synopsis

Rule one: Don’t look at the demon.

When I arrived at my uncle’s house, I expected my relatives to be like me—outcast sorcerers who don’t practice magic. I was right about the sorcery, but wrong about everything else.

Rule two: Don’t listen to the demon.

My uncle chose a far deadlier power. He calls creatures of darkness into our world, binds them into service contracts, and sells them to the highest bidder. And I’m supposed to act like I don’t know how illegal and dangerous it is.

Rule three: Don’t talk to the demon.

All I had to do was keep my nose out of it. Pretend I didn’t find the summoning circle in the basement. Pretend I didn’t notice the shadowy being trapped inside it. Pretend I didn’t break the rules.

But I did, and now it’s too late.

Review

And here we go on another adventure, here we find out who Robin Page is, the new member of the guild. We find out how she managed to get a demon.

Robin’s parents are deceased and she now lives with her uncle, aunt and cousin. Robin is only looking for one thing, she wants to find her mother’s grimoire and have her inheritance but her uncle is doing everything he can to delay things. He even makes her discover that the library in her basement is home to a demon, who doesn’t want to be seen and who absolutely doesn’t want to make a contract to be bound to a human.

Yet over time Robin will succeed in communicating with the demon, she will learn his name, Zylas, and they will create a relationship that is quite strange.

I like Robin a lot, probably because she is a bookworm rather than a fighter and I identify more with her. Despite the fact that she’s afraid of Zylas, she’s still attached to him and she’s discovering a lot more about demons.

Her uncle does his work for money, he brings in demons, finds out their names and sells them to the highest bidder. This disgusts Robin and she will do anything to save Zylas.

I enjoyed meeting Robin and seeing the relationship between her and Zylas develop. It’s strange because Zylas is not a good person, he’s a demon, he keeps telling Robin that she’s weak, that she’s stupid but at the same time he can’t resist the cakes she brings him.

I made another great discovery with this tome and I feel that Tori and her mages may soon need the help of Robin and Zylas.

Quick Word: A beautiful discovery in a world that I still love so much.

Chronique

About the author

Annette Marie is the author of YA urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, its prequel trilogy Spell Weaver, romantic fantasy Red Winter, and sassy UF series The Guild Codex.

Her first love is fantasy, while fast-paced adventures and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She proudly admits she has a thing for dragons, and her editor has inquired as to whether she intends to include them in every single book.

Annette lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it’s not quite that bad). She shares her life with her husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.
