Synopsis :
Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.
Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.
Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.
But when Cara’s classmates get swept up by anti-L’eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn’t safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara’s locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.
Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she’s fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.
The story :
The Aliens made their apparition and aren’t welcome even if they give a cure for cancer. They are always people who think that the Aliens are only there for reproduction.
Cara is accepted for being a part of the exchange program student and Aelys will be her L’eihr student. Cara will see her friends changing sides and turning against her and Aelyx.
The relation between Aelyx and Cara will build up, deepened and we’ll see the real objective of this program.
The characters :
Cara is intelligent, strong and wants to have a successful life. She agreed for the program because she saw the benefit in it. She love debates and her talent is going to be put on test because few people want Aelyx in their city. Her best friend and her boyfriend won’t talk to her. Aelyx will be there for her even if he considers the humans less intelligent than L’eihrs. Even when everyone is against her she stays strong and tries her very best to make Aelyx comfortable and to treat him well.
Aelyx is arrogant, pretentious, distant, intelligent and he came on earth with a hidden and not very praiseworthy objective. Things on his planet are more advanced so he talks down to everyone on Earth. But even if he doesn’t like the humans, Cara is the first for which he feels something and he doesn’t really want to live her behind when he will leave. They have different social rules and don’t date for fun. They are paired up. Cara will be the first person to break his shell.
Extract :
“I studied your history while I was still on L’eihr.” And with a smirk that had become his own personal signature, he added, “It didn’t take long.” He returned his attention to the copy of Advanced Binuclear Theories the science teacher had lent him. Maybe he should read How to Avoid Acting Like a Pretentious Ass instead.
My review :
The description of the planet L’eihr is amazing, it’s well done and with the author’s great storytelling skills, you can picture the planet in your head even we’re in earth most of the time. The whole exchange program thing is very clever because it’s the best way to discover the lifestyle of someone.
The romance between Cara and Aelyx is kept at slow pace, making the swoony scene between them special. It’s honestly one of the sexiest kissing scenes ever.
This book contains several subjects as the racism, the family support and the friendship. In different level, this book make me think of the future, the humanity future and sadly it’s not hopeful.
This is the beginning of a great series, I like the characters and the story. And I absolutely love this cover, she’s amazing and describe very well Earth and L’eihr. I can’t wait to read the next book and discover L’eihr and see who is really Jaxen.
More :
